So there's this amazing swimmer at my school who's being recruited for swimming by all of these great schools, and her first choice is Stanford, which, coincidentally, is my first choice too. Will Stanford decide that, since they already took someone from my high school (even though they only accepted her because of athletics), it wouldn't be fair or diversity-minded enough if they accepted another applicant from the same school (i.e, me). My chances are low enough, I don't really need this screwing me over now hahah. It's just so frustrating. There's nothing I can do about not being born crazy athletic, and no matter how much I attempt to excel at the things that I am passionate about and that I am good at, it will never have as much of an impact as her swimming does. Besides, she's being recruited by Harvard and Princeton and who knows what other schools, can't she just go there instead? xP
I know this sounds more like a rant than anything else, but it's an honest question, I promise: how does having an amazing swimmer at my school affect my chances of getting into Stanford?

It affects your chances, but not as much as you seem to be worrying. They might compare you to members of your school, but that does not mean that they will only take one applicant from there. Depending on the school/quality of applicants, several may be admitted- there is NOT a quota system. So it won't affect your chances too much.

Step 1: Take some deep breaths. Step 2: Go to your profile and look honestly at your stats (If you properly complete Step 2 you will feel a sense of pride and accomplishment, as your high school work was awesome) Step 3: Realize that they're not going to be holding the two applications in their hands, checking things off, finding out that this other person swims, and throwing your application in the dumpster. Just not going to happen.

Hahahah thanks guys. You're all going to think this is really dumb, but actually, I was envisioning the scenario described in your step 3, Sherlock. Sort of. And Anagram, I really hope you're right

Wow, really? Mine sent 0. Stanford must not like us. Then again, my school is not close either haha. Nonetheless, it's encouraging to have (at least anecdotal) evidence that they don't quota

Good lord, you know Latin too!? Now I'm just ashamed . It must be an enormous amount of work to translate such a long and complicated work--I guess that's why you're working on it for the whole year. I just finished reading Book 9, things are getting pretty bloody . By the way, good luck in your interview, although I'm sure you'll knock 'em dead (figuratively of course)!

Lesser known? I think not. But I would never just "knock them dead", not subtle enough :DD Hahahah NO AENEID SPOILERS, yeah we're not moving very fast. It's partly because the grammar's a little convoluted and partly because our class gets off-topic every .2 seconds. Needless to say, it's my favorite class

Three kids from my school were accepted to Yale last year. One of them was a beast at track/cross country, and the other two were just brainiacs. So, it might, but I'm not convinced.

I don't know if all the schools are the same though... we sent more than one to Yale and MIT and Brown, and like 20 to Duke (I think they're biased towards people in the region xD), but only one of the 4 people that got into Brown got into Princeton (for example).

Look, I'm a swimmer too and have been on a ton of recruit trips and have talked to a ton of coaches. Heres the deal: the coaches have set admission spots...meaning they have a certain number of people they can get in. These spots are completely separate from 'normal' admission. So, any recruited athlete from your school does NOT affect your chances of getting in at all. And furthermore, they will not take into account how many people from your school got in. They will, however, look at how you rank compared to your class and how the rigor of your school. Focus on keeping your grades up, writing a great essay, and getting great recs. Don't think about what the swimmer is doing, think about what YOU are doing.
